How to Quit Any Addiction? What is the effective way to overcome any kind of addiction?
It’s a tough question, isn’t it?
In almost every household, there is someone struggling with addiction.
Addictions can manifest in various ways:
(1) Some women become addicted to watching TV serials, going crazy if they miss an episode.
(2) Others develop a habit of wearing jewelry and beauty ornaments.
(3) Some individuals become fixated on earning more money, while others strive to save as much as possible.
(4) There are those who become addicted to working excessively for the sake of their careers.
(5) Social media, YouTube, and online games can also become addictive.
(6) Furthermore, addictions to masturbation, watching pornographic movies, and sex are prevalent.
I believe I have covered the major types of addiction. Now, the question is, how can one overcome addiction?
You may have encountered numerous people who smoke cigarettes or drink alcohol, promising that today is their last day, and they will never touch those substances again. However, they disappoint you by failing to keep their promises, leaving you fed up with their repeated attempts to quit. How did that occur? Did they do it on purpose? Or is it that none of you know how to overcome addiction?
The procedure is straightforward. It doesn’t happen overnight. You learnt things gradually, and certain things become ingrained in your life over time. Therefore, unlearning them follows the same process and requires time. Things that have become a significant part of your life cannot be easily abandoned with just a promise. That’s why most people struggle to overcome addiction. Instead of declaring that you will completely stop something from tomorrow, which rarely works because it’s the wrong first step, consider this: Can you easily give up something that has been an important part of your life until now?
The mere thought of quitting it tomorrow will emotionally overwhelm you before you even begin. In many cases, individuals attempting to quit their addictions go through terrible times. Some even end up in a coma or commit suicide. So, instead of completely letting go, try saying that you won’t use that thing for two days, and after that, you can have it again.
This approach sends a psychological message to your brain that it’s okay, it’s just a two-day matter, and then you can have it again. Emotionally, you will be stronger than if you were to say you’re quitting forever.
Although the addicted patient will experience the pain of not using what they’re addicted to during those two days, remind them that it’s only a matter of two days. Don’t leave them alone; spend time with them so that they don’t feel lonely, which might trigger their desire for the addictive substance. After two days, allow them to indulge in what they’re addicted to; in other words, keep your promise. Emotionally, they will feel understood and supported, which will strengthen your relationship and encourage their efforts to quit the addiction.
By practicing abstaining from the addiction for two days, you’re not abruptly stopping their habit, but you’re increasing their willpower. For those two days, they managed to control themselves and not use the substance they were accustomed to. Repeat this practice in a week or so, abstaining for another two days, then gradually increase the number of days.
In this manner, you’re teaching them how to live without the things that have become ingrained in their lives. You’re teaching them how to unlearn and overcome their addictions. Remember, you’re here to experience everything, but it should be under your control, rather than becoming addicted. Once things are under your control, use them as you desire.
